GKD Helps Spread Local Christmas Cheer By Donating Toys To Children In Need

December 21, 2015

The holidays are a time for giving, with generosity being virtually contagious this time of year. In addition to our Thanksgiving Food Drive, GKD has partnered with the Rescue Fire Company of Cambridge, Maryland since 2009 for an Annual Toy Drive.

The fourteen children, who are selected by the local Social Services organization, include ten boys and four girls ranging in ages 1-12 years old. GKD received the names and ages of the children chosen, along with a list of what each child asked Santa for. All of the children live within Cambridge, furthering the company’s commitment to helping local families.

According to Elsie Gerdom of GKD’s Human Resources Department, “Everyone participates by bringing in a new toy, then GKD sends a couple of employees out to purchase extra toys. We always have great participation.”

The toys are then taken from GKD’s lobby by the Fire Company to be sorted and wrapped for the children. Just before Christmas, a Santa-suited fireman loads the presents on the Hook/Ladder fire truck and delivers them to the children’s homes. Since the children in the neighborhood all come out to watch Santa on the fire truck, they bring additional toys so no child is left without a present.

Elsie further explains, “It is a wonderful event and because of the Fire Company and the generosity of the GKD employees a lot of children are able to have a Merry Christmas.”

The Rescue Fire Company in Cambridge goes above and beyond to bring joy to the community. Their efforts extend beyond presents; they also bring Christmas trees and food to families in need. Their commitment to the community is a wonderful example of what this time of year is about, generosity and love.

Happy Holidays from the GKD Family to you and yours!
