Last year the set designer of a very glamourous awards show thought that a curtain made of glistening Swarovski crystals would up the glamour quotient considerably. The challenge was to find a substrate so that the crystal curtain wouldn’t look like an upscale version of those best-forgotten, beaded, college dorm curtains.
...the Swarovski crystals in combination with GKD metal fabric is astonishingly modern.
Traditional curtain fabrics like silk, damask and velvet were tested in combination with the Swarovski crystals, but in the end they proved to be too opaque, too heavy and too, well, traditional. It was therefore concluded that it was necessary to strike out in a whole new direction.
Enter GKD, who’s woven metal fabrics, specifically Sambesi, turned out to be the perfect solution. The crystals could be easily woven into the product. The openness of the weave made for a wonderful lightness of effect in part because metal fibers are reflective on their own account. Perhaps most importantly, the Swarovski crystals in combination with GKD metal fabric is astonishingly modern. And the winner is.

Whereas not so long ago the security of a building rarely entered into its design equation, today it’s one of the factors that heads architects’ lists.
GKD’s products have earned a stellar reputation for their blast protective qualities. In recent GSA tests, a selection of our fabrics, used as an internal screen behind glass curtain walls, proved to be superior in their ability to protect the building inhabitants in the event of a shrapnel producing blast. As a result, GKD fabrics have recently been endorsed and specified for several high-security installations. For more information, please contact GKD Metal Fabrics.
