Architects Design Unique Hospital Parking Facade Using Metal Mesh

June 9, 2015

Project Name: Hartford Hospital Parking Garage

Location: Hartford, CT

Architect: Perkins + Will NY

Collab Architect/Engineer: Desman Associates

GKD Metal Fabric: Tigris and Lago

The award-winning Hartford Hospital parking garage was part of a massive hospital modernization project known as HH2020. The project, designed by Perkins+Will in collaboration with engineers, Desman Associates, faced numerous challenges. A time constraint forced construction to be done within 12 months. Additionally, adjacent property line adjustments were necessary as well as the relocation of a sanitary main.

The completed parking garage accommodates the hospital’s 1,200 employees, in addition to specialty parking for neighborhood residents. The modernization of the garage is seen in its amenities, including electric car-charging stations and a state-of-the-art fitness center on the ground level.

The nine-story garage breaks the mold of the traditional concrete parking structure with a stunning exterior design constructed using articulated precast panels, terra cotta colored perforated metal, and GKD stainless steel mesh.

Utilizing nearly 28,000 sq ft of metal fabrics Lago and Tigris, the portions of mesh cladding protect from external weathering elements and offer high visibility and optimum airflow. In addition to its transparency, ventilation and aesthetics, mesh is a favorable choice for parking due to its cost-effective installation and the long lifespan of stainless steel.

Adding a portion of modern materials to the structure’s façade transformed an ordinary looking garage into an extraordinary one.

AWARDS: 1st Place Award in the Transportation/Utilities/Civil category in the CBC 2014 Project Team Award Competition and the garage earned the PCI Best Parking Structure award in 2013.
