Bertelsmann, German-based mass media corporation, utilized the World Expo in 2000 to expose their brand to the public as a leader in the world of mass communications. The virtually unknown brand drew an audience of over a million visitors with the Planet M Pavilion-Media for the World exhibition.

Architect Becker, Gewers, Kühn & Kühn Architekten and design agency Triad, along with engineering firm Arup, were responsible for the structure’s design, which utilized steel and GKD metal fabric.

The futuristic, circular steel structure is clad in reflective stainless steel mesh. The stunning design was a challenge standing on steel stilts, 30 feet above the ground. Working with the specifications of a local shipbuilder, GKD manufactured an Escale mesh façade that was designed in the same fashion as the lightweight body of a boat, the hull.

The pavilion transports users through the timeline of media and how it has contributed to society in the 20th century and to human history as a whole.

A halogen lighting system illuminates the structure at night adding another element to the building’s unique exterior attributes.
