NBBJ merits recognition for their unyielding commitment to designing energy efficient buildings. As part of our architecture, engineering and design highlight series we are featuring the award-winning, internationally renowned architects at NBBJ. Interestingly, the firm was founded in 1943 and was originally known as Naramore, Bain, Brady and Johanson, later changing their name to their combined initials.
The architects at WTL Design, with the help of BMW Building Design Senior Manager, Nicholas Ott, designed the BMW Brand Experience Center in Shanghai using a minimalistic approach. The project marks the first use of GKD’s Mediamesh technology in China. The stunning glass and white design evokes transparency, both in the building itself and the brand’s identity. The 21,500 square foot building utilizes interior Mediamesh screens that are visible from the outside, thanks again to the transparent glass façade.
In the latest Mediamesh® project by GKD, the James Branch Cabell Library at Virginia Commonwealth University is transformed with stainless steel wire mesh interwoven with LED lights. The vitrine where the Mediamesh® sits faces out to the rose plaza; one of the most densely populated places on campus. Two panels of Mediamesh® are interconnected to create the visually stunning and interactive screen that is now a popular attraction for students and visitors.
The port city of Dalian in northern China is a city of contrasts. A vibrant center of trade and industry, this rapidly growing metropolis plays an equally important role in the region as one of the country's most popular vacation destinations. In the city center of Dalian, the Beijing office of the NBBJ architectural firm designed the Eton Place Dalian tower complex as a superlative multifunctional development: five mixed-use towers standing 41 to 81 stories high and a six-story mall transform the 6.23-hectare site into an exclusive microcosm of urban life. The connecting element between the two highest towers is the spacious mall, with a roof designed in a manner reminiscent of a park. Over six floors, it offers a representative atmosphere for high-class boutiques, a luxury department store, elite gastronomy and a supermarket. Large Mediamesh screens from GKD running around the corners of the building seize the attention of passers-by at both main entrances. The transparent displays made of filigree stainless steel mesh with integrated LED profiles function as an advertising platform for luxury goods from all over the world and underline the exclusivity of the building complex.
